A Letter From The 443 Social Club & Lounge

Hi Friends –

Last week we emailed you about the updated NY State Liquor Authority rules that prohibit us from advertising or charging a cover for live music. These rules forced us to close our doors again.

We’ve discovered this isn’t just an SLA issue. Empire State Development is banning venues from holding live music events even when the venue does not hold a liquor license.

A lot of you reached out privately to ask how you can help, and after some contemplation, we’ve decided to launch a Facebook group dedicated to amplifying the message that New York is ready to allow live music – with all safety precautions in place, of course.

We’ll do that through a combination of targeted letter writing to elected officials and a social media campaign. Our representatives are likely not managing their own social media accounts, but if their staffers are dealing with a flood of letters and @ mentions on this issue we have a shot at getting the new SLA rules reconsidered.

Several times a week we’ll post an easy ACTION ITEM for group members to tackle to help get the word out.

The group is public and anyone can join, but you must agree to the group rules before you’re allowed in:

  1. We are not here to come up with “creative” ways to circumvent the new rules. Our goal is to change them.
  2. Be kind and courteous.
  3. No promotions or spam.
  4. No hate speech or bullying.
  5. This is a NO Politics Zone. This is not about political parties, or how much you hate one or the other. We are working together to change a specific NY policy.

If you’re interested in helping the cause and willing to participate in the action items, you can find the page here:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/letthemusicplayny/

We picked up over 400 members in the first 24 hours and we’re close to 600 today on day 3. We’re getting some traction and need to keep the momentum going.

We will keep you posted as the situation develops.
