The fun, high-energy acoustic folk-roots music of The Bog Brothers filled the air at the equally fun Funk n Waffles on a recent Wednesday. Led by multi-instrumentalist Mike Gridley, the band played classics such as Woody Guthrie’s “Vigilante Man” and The Waterboy’s “Fisherman’s Blues.” This band is also known for their impressive originals, such as “Breakaway,” “One More Song,” “Carry Me Away,” and “Macon.”
Rounding out the rest of the Bog Brothers this Wednesday evening: Mike Lounsbery on harmonica and vocals, Steve Buck on vocals and bass, Scott Wilson on dobro, and Steve Scuteri… substituting in for their usual guitarist, Marc Odin. Drummer Taylor Bucci was also out of town for this show.
Despite the missing drummer and a substitute guitarist, the Bog Brothers put on a strong and entertaining show. People feel relaxed and welcome at Funk ‘n Waffles, a wonderful venue for local musicians. Patrons enjoyed beer, wine, and cocktails along with savory and sweet waffles. This reviewer enjoyed their famous Jive Turkey waffle, made from stuffing and piled high with mashed potatoes sliced turkey and delicious gravy. Of course there was a side of cranberry sauce! One of the band-members enjoyed a James Brownie waffle when the night was done. That’s a waffle made out of brownie mix and covered in vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream.
