CNY Arts Center’s ambitious Butterfly Project, 15,000 Butterflies for 15,000 children, has surpassed its goal by nearly 3,000, and will launch the Butterfly exhibit with the opening of the play that prompted the project to begin with, I Never Saw another Butterfly. The play runs May 11-20 with Friday and Saturdays at 7pm and Sundays at 3pm at the Arts Center located at 11 River Glen Dr. on the Cayuga College Fulton Campus.
The book of the same name chronicles the poems and drawings of the 15,000 children who passed through Terezin Ghetto during the Holocaust. The stage play is the work of Celeste Raspanti telling one story of the mere 100 children who survived the ordeal, Raja Englanderova’s story. The cast includes more than a dozen children sharing the words and poems of other children delivering a message of innocence and courage.
“It is a hard story to tell.” Said Director Rebecca Fox, “No one wants to be reminded of the Holocaust, but that’s exactly why we have to tell it. It is true, it really happened and we must make sure future generations know to remain vigilant. We don’t want this history to repeat itself.”
The Butterfly exhibit will be on display in the theatre lobby during the run of the production, May 11-20, at the Arts Center on the Cayuga College Fulton Campus, 11 River Glen Dr. I Never Saw another Butterfly will be the final production in the campus location as the Arts Center has plans to open Fulton’s first Community Arts Center in downtown Fulton later this year.
