SUMMARY:Folkus Project
DESCRIPTION:A truly gifted performer with a bag full of enchanting songsLucy Kaplansky started out singing in Chicago folk music clubs as a teenager. Then\, barely out of high school\, she took off for New York City\, where she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers—Suzanne Vega\, Steve Forbert\, The Roches\, and others. With a beautiful flair for harmony\, Lucy was everyone’s favorite singing partner\, but most often\, she found herself singing in a duo with Shawn Colvin. People envisioned big things for them; in fact\, The New York Times said it was “easy to predict stardom for her.” But then Lucy dropped it all.\nConvinced that her calling was in another direction\, Lucy left the musical fast track to pursue a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Upon completing her degree\, Dr. Kaplansky took a job at a New York hospital working with chronically mentally ill adults and started a private practice. Yet she continued to sing. Lucy was often pulled back into the studio by her friends (who now had contracts with record labels) wanting her to sing on their albums. She harmonized on Colvin’s Grammy-winning “Steady On” and on Nanci Griffith’s “Lone Star State of Mind” and “Little Love Affairs.” She also landed soundtrack credits\, singing with Suzanne Vega on “Pretty in Pink” and Griffith on “The Firm” and several commercial credits as well.\nThen Shawn Colvin—who was itching to produce a record—hooked up with Lucy\, her ex-singing partner. They went into the studio\, and suddenly\, Lucy was back in the music business. She signed with Red House Records and started playing gigs. Red House released The Tide in 1994 to rave reviews\, and within six months\, Lucy signed with a major booking agency and began touring so much it required leaving her two psychologist positions behind.\nLucy’s second album\, Flesh and Bone (1996)\, emphasized her development as a gifted songsmith. Then Lucy’s success took flight with back-to-back hit albums Ten Year Night (1999) and Every Single Day (2001). Both received the AFIM (Association For Independent Music) award for Best Pop Album of the Year. The Red Thread (2004) weaves together themes of motherhood\, home\, and the family with stunning production. Over the Hills (2007) and Reunion (2012) explore universal themes of love\, joy\, loss\, and dreams for the future through reflections on family. Everyday Street (2018) is a stunning collection of songs weaving stories of joy\, friendship\, family\, loss\, and discovery. Her most recent album\, Last Days of Summer (2022)\, is “utterly beautiful and affecting…songs from her life that have resonance in ours” (Scott Simon\, NPR).\nIn 1998\, Lucy teamed with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell to form the supergroup Cry Cry Cry and recorded some of their favorite songs written by other artists. The resulting album\, Cry Cry Cry–which The New Yorker dubbed “a collection of lovely harmonizing and pure emotion\,” and Entertainment Weekly gave an “A” rating–was an astonishing success in stores and on radio. The trio’s national tour of sold-out concerts introduced Lucy’s luminous voice to a new audience. In 2017 and 2018\, the trio celebrated their 20th anniversary with a sold-out national tour and released their first recording in 20 years\, a single of Jump Little Children’s “Cathedrals.”\nIn 2010\, Lucy joined up with acclaimed singer-songwriters John Gorka and Eliza Gilkyson to record an album as part of the new folk supergroup Red Horse. Awash in gorgeous harmonies and stripped-down production\, the album Red Horse features the singers performing each other’s songs. Red Horse received rave reviews and was the number-one album on Folk Radio for several months. The trio were interviewed on NPR’s “Weekend Edition” and appeared on NPR’s “Mountain Stage.”\nLucy contributed her story to a unique book\, SOLO: Women Singer-Songwriters in Their Own Words\, which includes some of the best-known women on the music scene today: Ani DiFranco\, Shawn Colvin\, Sheryl Crow\, Jewel\, Sarah McLachlan\, and others. She was also featured in Lipshtick\, a collection of essays by NPR commentator Gwen Macsai.\nLucy continues to tour and receive airplay both nationally and internationally.\nhttps://lucykaplansky.com/\n“Lucy Kaplansky is a truly gifted performer with a bag full of enchanting songs.” –The New Yorker\n“Kaplansky weaves…fragile lives together\, making even tenuous connections as palpable as flesh and blood.” –USA Today\n“Utterly beautiful and affecting…Lucy sings songs from her life that have resonance in ours.” –Scott Simon\, NPR Weekend Edition\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Tier Three Project Support program\, a regrant program of the County of Onondaga with the support of the County Executive and administered by CNY Arts.\n~ This project is also made possible through the support and generosity of our Folkus members.\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:John Brown's Body w/s/g Double Tiger
DESCRIPTION:The torch has been relit! Featuring a group of long time JBB players\, including founding members Kevin Kinsella\, Tommy Benedetti\, and Lee Hamilton\, the undisputed OGs of the scene are fired up to hit the stage in 2025. This year\, John Brown’s Body celebrates 30 years of making original roots reggae music around the world. They will be touring as well as releasing new music throughout 2025.\nThe group has been on sabbatical the past few years\, taking a break from the road and studio. But family is always family\, and in early 2023\, with JBB still dormant\, Kinsella reached out to Benedetti about getting together to play some of the classic era JBB music. The crew was assembled\, featuring players from all different periods of JBB’s history. After a handful of recent shows the embers were burning – the music was sounding better than ever and the time was right. So\, with the support and blessing of Elliot Martin\, the torch will be re-lit. In addition to Kinsella\, Benedetti and Hamilton\, the group features Nate Edgar (bass\, 2006-2016)\, Jon Pentronzio (keys\, 2009-2018)\, and TJ Schaper (trombone\, 2015-2018)\, who collectively have decades of service with JBB. Van Gordon Martin (guitar – Skatalites\, G Love\, and more) has been in the family over fifteen years and joins the group for the first time on stage.\nWith a long and storied career on the scene covering three decades and multiple lineup changes\, JBB was formed in 1996 by Kevin Kinsella and released its seminal album “All Time”\, which achieved near mythical status and is credited with being a cornerstone of the US reggae scene. As the original lead singer and songwriter for JBB\, Kinsella is responsible for bringing a vast body of original music to the scene\, and across the first five JBB releases. From its breakout release on Itown Records ‘All Time’\, to multiple releases on Shanachie Records\, JBB cemented itself as a successful touring and recording outfit with an original voice. In 2005\, JBB joined forces with the legends Easy Star Records\, which would begin a lasting and fruitful relationship spanning over ten years and seven releases.\nHailed as “Future roots\, reggae\, and dub with an intricately balanced weaving of vocals\, percussion\, keyboard\, bass\, guitar\, and stunning horn section that ties it all together” (WRUV)\, John Brown’s Body has built “a legacy that has inspired and carved a path for the now thriving contemporary American reggae scene” (Rudeboy Reggae). Formed in Ithaca\, New York\, in the mid 1990s\, at a time when there wasn’t yet a far-reaching U.S. reggae scene\, JBB was one of a small handful of U.S. reggae bands that began touring nationally. Since then\, JBB has played an important role in helping define distinctly “American reggae.” JBB’s music is steeped in traditional vibes\, but unapologetically incorporates elements from other genres.\nTheir unique approach resonated with the masses. The group’s 2008 full-length record\, Amplify\, hit #1 on the Billboard Reggae Chart\, 2012’s JBB In Dub EP reached #1 on iTunes’ Reggae Chart\, and in 2013 Kings And Queens topped both Billboard and iTunes Reggae Charts at #1. On stage\, JBB finds a home across a host of genres and has toured the world extensively\, performing alongside: Slightly Stoopid\, Dave Matthews\, Burning Spear\, Gym Class Heroes\, SOJA\, and many more.\nThe 2025 live show will feature music from the first 5 classic era JBB records and the band looks forward to presenting this music\, as well as brand new material\, with a rejuvenated\, electric vibe to the fans.\nPRESENTED BY VISIONS FEDERAL CREDIT UNION\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Paper Rabbit\, Chores & Stress Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Paper Rabbit is a melody driven Indie Pop band from Syracuse\, NY. Singer/songwriter Brenna Merritt joins veterans of the Syracuse music scene including Erik Henning of Polar Bear Club\, Jon Davis of Another Breath\, Aaron Geiskopf of Election Day and Teddy Casper of Mayflower. Paper Rabbit = catchy melodies\, driving rhythms\, textured guitar riffs layered with synthy bliss.\n/////\nStress Dolls is the moniker of Chelsea O’Donnell\, an alt/pop/rock artist from Buffalo\, NY.\nO’Donnell began playing around Western New York in 2013\, initially calling herself Wolf and eventually forming a band. After releasing one EP\, the group went through a few different line-ups and\, in time\, changed their name to Stress Dolls. In the Spring of 2016 the band recorded a self-titled EP at GCR Audio and released the recording later that same year. Over the next several months they performed in Buffalo as well as neighboring cities and towns\, and opened shows for touring acts such as Shonen Knife\, We Are Scientists\, and USS.\nDue to differing pursuits the band split in early 2017\, but O’Donnell decided to keep playing under the name Stress Dolls. She made a move to Nashville\, TN but wasn’t even there a year before chronic health issues she had been struggling with – Croh’s disease and gastroparesis- sent her to the hospital to undergo a feeding tube procedure. Following the surgery she moved back to Buffalo\, and after a period of recovery\, began writing\, performing\, and recording again. Largely due to the tentative nature of her health\, O’Donnell established Stress Dolls as a solo act in order to decrease stress and go at her own pace.\nFrom 2019 to 2021 O’Donnell independently recorded and released new music with a few different collaborators\, including Charles Dusel (Lonestar Sailing)\, Jay Milton (The Demos)\, and Marc Hunt. In early 2022 she was invited to work with producer Jim Wirt (Jack’s Mannequin\, Something Corporate\, Incubus) at Superior Sound Studios in Cleveland\, OH. After recording several songs together\, including her upcoming single\, “Body\,” she was offered a record deal with Sun Pedal Recordings.\nCurrently\, Stress Dolls takes on several forms live: solo with O’Donnell and her acoustic guitar; as a duo when joined by longtime collaborator Sally Schaefer on violin; or as a band when combined with members TJ Luckman (bass)\, Jordan Smith (lead guitar)\, and Josh English (drums). The project’s sound has drawn such comparisons as “Joni Mitchell meets Nirvana\,” “Avril Lavigne and Foo Fighters in a blender\,” and “Kathleen Hanna fronting Modest Mouse.”\n/////\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading...
