Through the rain and into a beautiful sunset Syracuse showed up on the island for Austin, Texas native Gary Clark Jr. Being a lifetime Hendrix fan I immediately fell in love with Clark’s similar style. I felt the same way with local act Tanksley. http://garyclarkjr.com
Tuesday night Clark was spotted hanging out at Funk ‘n Waffles and Al’s Wine & Whiskey Lounge in Armory Square. I always joke I’ve yet to be starstruck. I would have chanced that had I been lucky enough to encounter Clark. Maybe next time.
At the show I was surrounded by familiar faces enjoying every lick of his guitar playing accompanied by a solid rhythm section. I hear this rumor that the young crowd doesn’t show up for the blues. They showed up last night. A highlight was the extended encore version of “Come Together”, a cover featured in the movie Justice League. Clark played well known originals including “Bright Lights.” Thank you to Creative Concerts for bringing this act to such a cool venue.
Papermill Island is a unique setting along the dam with the Budweiser Amphitheater facing the river. It’s easy to get around. General admission allows for a lot of flexibility in seating options or standing room up front. The promoters have been offering VIP packages with Dinosaur BBQ, a full bar and private restrooms. Baldwinsville also has many restaurants and bars within a short walk of the island. If you haven’t seen a show here I highly recommend it.
