Jess Novak Opens for Danielle Miraglia at The Nelson Odeon

Jess Novak opened for fellow multi instrumentalist Bostonian Danielle Miraglia at the Fall season opener at The Nelson Odeon. Most acts are national but Leo Crandall has a CD Release show on October 12. It is worth a trip to Nelson to sit in the old grange hall and listen to every clear note. Owners Jeff and Linda Schoenfeld have created a very intimate and warm atmosphere. Neighbors, The Nelson Farm Store, have a tasting room with NYS specialty foods to visit before the show.

Miraglia was a return artist to The Odeon. This show was sponsored by local photographer and music supporter Jack Bocchino. He had told me about Miraglia for a long time. She was all and more than I expected. Blues, slide guitar, badass lyrics and genuinely cool stage presence kept my full attention. Both women shared themes of equality, hope and justice. Novak opened with a cover of James Brown’s It’s a Man’s World. “This is a man’s world, this is a man’s world. But it wouldn’t be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl.” The storyteller setting allowed the artists to share the history of their original songs. Original Counting on Love inspired by John Lennon’s Imagine is a response to recent elections and our reality. “You can’t fight hate with hate. Love is always the answer,” she shared.Miraglia had a similar theme with a different take in a song Everybody’s Wrong.  “In the end we are all just trying to get through life and we have different ideas. We can all agree that everyone should think like we do,” she half jokingly explained. ” Monster touched me. Check out the lyrics here. Ben Wayne joined Jess Novak for a few songs from their duo, Safe Word. They are releasing Rise, recorded in Nashville, in the upcoming months. Ben Wayne also has an upcoming album. Novak shared a brand new song that was a definite crowd favorite. Watch out for Northern Lights to hit. Novak and Miraglia joined forces for an encore.
