Kicking it off Christopher Getman starts fundraising campaign for Words and Verses

The tricky part with this project is that we’re basically inventing a new audience

In 2015, Christopher Getman was sitting in church and realized that he had never made music for God. He had been creating music in various ways for more than 20 years and yet, he had never taken that step. But he was determined to change that.

On Monday, October 26, also Getman’s 40th birthday, he announced the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for his newest project, Words and Verses: A Biblical Music Project.

When he hatched the idea in 2015, he was in the middle of another musical project, American Pixels, which took tracks by American game composers and arranged them in new styles. That went on to win a Syracuse Area Music Award in 2018.

Then it was time to shift his focus to Words and Verses. The premise is simple, as Getman’s new Kickstarter campaign announces: “take a verse from the Bible and craft a musical composition that represents it.”

What is more profound about the project is that it has really not been done before.

“Oddly enough, I spent a while on Google researching my idea, prior to announcing my concept,” Getman said in a previous interview about the idea. “I did not find any project out there that matched. In that regard, it feels great to be helming this idea.”

Getman will take specific Bible verses and compose instrumental music to match the themes, ideas and messages of them. Though hymns are common and spiritual music with lyrics is not hard to find, instrumental works encapsulating verses of the Bible have yet to be created – and Getman is ready for the challenge.

“The tricky part with this project is that we’re basically inventing a new audience,” he says on the Kickstarter page. “The idea of ‘Bible music’ doesn’t really exist in a large capacity and as the genres represented don’t cleanly fall into a smooth bucket, it’s hard to pinpoint who the listener is. We understand and accept that, and actually, part of this whole adventure is bringing worlds together. Fans of electronic music who aren’t Bible-readers may hear a track and find themselves opening up the scripture just to see what it says. Bible-readers who don’t typically listen to electronic music may find themselves appreciating a new genre and expanding their repertoire. Composers who normally only write for film or video games may find themselves interested in contributing to a potential future album of scripture-based works.”

Getman hopes to use mostly local musicians to create the music and is currently raising money to cover the costs of recording, studio time, mixing, mastering and more. He also lists reach goals on the campaign page which explain just how far this project could go. Getman doesn’t just see this as a single CD project, but potentially several albums, music videos and live concerts.

He hopes for a June 2022 completion date and is happy to announce that he’s already recorded some live violin, piano, marimba and vibraphone so far.

“It’s exciting and a bit surreal,” Getman says of the launch of the campaign. “I’ve been rehearsing the Kickstarter speech in my head for years, and now, it’s finally out there! I’m also feeling, on the day of – extremely tired…It’s been some long days and late nights, but it’s done!”

Getman offers supporters a long list of incentives for their contributions including CD packages, digital downloads and even opportunities to commission a verse for the album.

The Kickstarter campaign is live through Wednesday, November 25, with a goal of $12,000. Should Getman surpass the goal, he has a long list of plans to put additional money to good use.

“Kickstarter worked well for me the first time around and my fans appreciated the various rewards and goodies that one can get beyond the music,” Getman says. “Speaking of, there are some pretty good ones this time, too.”
