The 2018 Rockin the Redhouse Benefit Concert took place Friday at the Landmark Theater. Ten bands from local corporations battled in front of a panel of judges to raise money for Red House Arts Center. CXtec’s band, “The Dinosaurs,” led by Ashley Cox won Most Rockin’ Band. TK99’s Gomez Adams and Lisa Chelenza hosted the four hour event. Judges were Todd Hobin, Dave Porter, Maria DeSantis and Steve Brown.
Audience participation plays part in the judging. “The Dinosaurs” had their own mascot encouraging the crowd. Carrier Corporation’s “The Chillerz” fans had light up signs and lots of enthusiasm. BNY Mellon’s “Petty Cash” dedicated their performance to Women’s Equality with three front women throwing cash. They joined a slew of awesome women ruling the stage. Each band highlighted the diverse talents of each member. A special award was created to recognize Mike Dufresne, a Rock Camp graduate, on guitar and sax.
Red House newly expanded their location in downtown Syracuse. Mike Spadaro said “The new building is gigantic but it’s not just bigger, it’s better.” The theater spaces are rentable and can seat 125 and 400 people. The rooms are acoustically treated with full lighting. There are dressing rooms, green rooms and everything one may need to put on an event. The next big production is “Snow Queen.” Find out more at http://www.theredhouse.org
Spadaro, bass player for Skunk City and more, has been teaching at Red House for four years. They provide an enrichment program to five Syracuse City Schools including music, theater and art and putting on mini productions. The new building also has more classroom space for Rock Camp which takes place on school breaks. Rock Camp is not just for rockers; singer songwriters and aspiring musicians of all genres are encouraged to attend. Many of the teachers are local musicians and do an awesome job of giving the students a real experience with band photoshoots and concerts to culminate the camp. Rock Camp is open to all students.
