Saturno “Crash Test”

Anthony Saturno, of Atkins Riot and Jess Novak Band, releases solo album

Anthony Saturno released his first solo album week one of quarantine and he’s spending this time writing and recording more. The solo album is like an adventure through his brain.  If you ever get the chance to talk to him about his music it makes his already impressive playing that much more incredible. He had songs dating back to about seven years ago in the works. He took advantage of this time to finish them up and send them to Jeremy Johnston for mastering. Many of the songs are instrumental. Saturno’s varied musical influences come through from classical to classic rock. His favorite is “Through the Vines,” because it has a lot of musical components and dynamics. The album art is a photo he took outside of Funk ‘n Waffles, a familiar view to many of us, after a gig when the lighting was just right. Evan Bujold came through again to add the font completing the look.

Here are a few personal descriptions Saturno has shared about the songs on Facebook:
Song name: “Dick Trickle” Yes, the one, the only… Dick Trickle. I used to be pretty into race cars back in the day, specifically because of my uncle,David Sakran . We would play NASCAR 2003 a lot, driving backwards on the track obviously to get the best crashes. Anthony Robert and I would play this all the time. One driver I enjoyed being frequently was Dick Trickle. Yes he’s real! However a lot of people don’t think that. So when Anthony’s mom, Jerilyn Creme Payne heard us relentlessly saying his name over and over. She called my mom furiously for “swearing” and my mom started yelling at me after she got off the phone. Luckily for me, I had a poster of all the race car drivers from 2000 – 2003 and I raced upstairs to my room to prove that Dick Trickle was a real dude who raced cars! She was quite relieved and giggled at his name and all that. So fast forward a bunch of years, sitting on my porch of my apartment and asking Anthony what we should make a song of. Dick Trickle was a solid contender for an idea. So we started on it, finished it and yet again fast forward a couple years, it’s going to make its way to track 8 on the album. He’s our hero, he’s our guy, He’s Dick Trickle. ????????????

A Story and a Song: “Sleepless Nights” This is a song that I recorded a while ago and had Justin Balcourt come in and lay down some Killer slide guitar! The basis of the story is that cigarettes are a nuisance all the way around. They smell bad, they take up too much room in your pockets and they cost way too damn much. Along with other vices in life, sometimes you stay up all night thinking how to rid of them. I’ve been playing this song a lot live with Jamie Cunningham and he’s got some great harmonies. Hope you enjoy!

“Dazzle” ‘Twas one of those nights where I was having a great sleep However, I woke up from a very weird dream I don’t exactly know what it was I just remember it woke me up A bout of insomnia at its best 5:30 AM and I couldn’t find rest I went to my room Recorded a tune You’ll hear it soon Spotify and iTunes Saturno Music with Crash Test Studios

The song Gabrielle is a song by Ween back from 2005. My good friend Daniel Villari came over and wanted to record it so we did and it came out like this. ???? P.S. – I had never heard the song beforehand, just the chords Dan gave me ????
Saturno is also recording with The Jess Novak Band at Hobin Studios. Jess Novak reminisced on their past few years together. She said he was so timid and wide eyed in the beginning and said something like “that was so much fun, I can’t believe I get paid.” She went on,”Now, I look up to him as much as I think he looked up to me. He’s taken all the experiences, like playing Taste of Syracuse and Key West, and run with them. It’s been really overwhelming to watch him grow. I always knew he was a genius on guitar but to hear his singing and songwriting improve and watch him keep trying new things, keep growing, becoming a leader makes me incredibly proud.”

His band, Atkins Riot, has new music too. Atkins Riot released “Staggered Ladders,” a fun song mastered in Germany by Electric Mojoland.  They won a mix and master session so they’re sending the next two singles there too: “The News” and “Pig Teeth.” I got to sneak a listen to these. They have a lot of energy, ”The News” gets better and better throughout the song, it’s intense. “Pig Teeth” is about a pig that almost ate my arm off.” We can all celebrate the fact that didn’t happen and he has two talented arms to play guitar with. He is currently playing around with a Steely Dan-ish  “Couch Potato” and thinks it will be an Atkins Riot song. He’s also challenging himself with a beautiful classical lullaby. It seems that his creativity is just pouring out through his fingertips. He is writing, composing and playing multiple instruments. Many people recognize him as our own “Slash” guitar virtuoso but he continues to prove he’s much more.
