Saturday, June 17 found the Syracuse based powerhouse funk trio Sophistafunk taking over the stage at the 9th annual Ziontific Music and Arts Festival in Russell, MA. The setting was intimate and the crowd lively as lead singer Jack Brown spitted out Sophistafunk classics from Gotta Walk to Will’ Out to Translucent. The vibes were off the hook as the set progressed; more like a backyard barbecue than a festival of hip hop, reggae, and funk. Sophistafunk always brings the high energy to their music.
With their roots deeply set in Upstate New York, Sophistafunk has been attracting national attention with their brand of righteous lyrics set to infectious rythmns. Adam Gold has incredible range getting the right funky sounds out of the synthesizer and keyboards while drummer Emmanuel Washington lays down the funky beat. The sound produced is big and gets you moving. On this particular June evening, in celebration of the summer solstice, Sophistafunk pleased the fortunate for a full hour and a half set.
Sophistafunk will be embarking on a 2 week midwest tour during July. CNY shows this summer will be in Watertown at The Broken String on July 7, Lafayette at Beak & Skiff (Sophistafest) on August 10, Trumansburg at The BBQ on August 23, and Bouckville at Ray Brother’s BBQ on September 1.
