MT: Hi Danielle! I love this project you were involved in replicating album covers. How did this idea evolve?
DM: This idea evolved very abruptly actually! I was listening to music with Jonas (Reddy-Nicholson) and Mac Miller’s album Swimming came on. It’s hard to explain but there was such a raw beauty to the album cover itself and it really struck me, I turned to Jonas and said “This would be such an easy and fun album to remake.” It started as just a silly idea and as time went on I thought to myself, I could do this, I could remake album covers and have it be a fun series.
MT: Did you choose iconic album covers then find the models or did you pick the covers after the models?
DM: I chose the covers first! I had a few that I knew instantly I wanted, and over the course of a couple of weeks I picked the rest of the covers. I wanted to include many genres and decades so it was extremely fun to browse and pick! Picking the models came so easy after that. I’m blessed to know many wonderful people who I knew would represent the albums well.
MT: You worked with Jessica Montgomery and Stay Fresh as well as including many other recognizable people from the community.
DM: I can’t thank Jessica or Stay fresh enough! We had such a wonderful team of people helping make these albums come to life. I had Ashley Rose and Tati Villegas by my side as creative support as well as hair and makeup. John Harris designed the shirt Destynee wore. For specific covers I had asked Margot Elizabeth and Hannah Iozza for makeup, and Meghan Heagerty for hair! I’d also like to mention that my mom came to many of the shoots to do hair and give support where it was needed.
I think the best part was watching everyone transform into their role, it was exciting to watch even their attitudes change and become someone else!
MT: Do you have any favorites or shoots you feel especially proud of?
DM: It’s hard to pick favorites because they all looked amazing, but definitely ones that still amaze me are Fleetwood Mac, Ari Lennox, Destiny’s child, and Amy Winehouse! I’d like to add that I am so proud of the David Bowie cover, it was extremely difficult and an uncomfortable shoot but it came out incredible thanks to Hannah, Jessica, and Margot.
I’d love to continue working as a Creative Director, after working on this project I’ve realized it is something I feel very proud doing and have fun with. I have future projects in mind that I am piecing together! This definitely won’t be the last you see from me!
There were so many I fell in love with I had a hard time choosing which ones to include here. I hope you check out the whole collection. You can see all 31 days of album covers on Danielle’s
