DESCRIPTION:The Family Ties\, an indie rock group based out of Williamsport\, PA began as the acoustic project of brothers Michael and Gino C. in 2010\, and has since transformed into a euphoric 4 piece. The Family Ties singer/song writer\, Michael C. writes songs that began from a tangible moment and are then transformed into melodic stories of loss/gain\, love/hate\, struggles and accomplishments. Michaels songwriting blends Americana\, indie rock and folk with narrative lyrics that depict tales of life. Michael’s attempt at capturing specific moments are felt deeply in the highs and lows of his story telling. “I want these songs to find a place in someone’s soul. The Family Ties released their debut album “Holding on to the Earth” on May 25th 2018 and performed to a sold out crowd in their home city of Williamsport. Bombvest had their first release on October 31\, 2024 called “Erratic”\, which is a five song rager\, available on all major streaming platforms. SUMMARY:Ominous Seapods w/s/g Ruha
DESCRIPTION:Meeting in the late ’80s while attending college in Plattsburgh\, New York\, the members of the neo-jam band Ominous Seapods soon found themselves at the head of a grass roots following fueled by their more than 200 live appearances each year. Just as Vermont’s Phish took their cue from the Greatful Dead’s endless touring and grass roots mailing list\, the Ominous Seapods are at the forefront of a movement of newer jam-inspired\, guitar dance bands (others include God Street Wine\, Juggling Suns and the Disco Biscuits).\nAfter dropping out of college the members of Ominous Seapods\, Max Verna (guitar\, vocals)\, Dana Monteith (guitar\, vocals)\, Tom Pirozzi (bass)\, Brian Mangini (keyboards) and Ted Marotta (drums)\, relocated to Albany and thrust themselves into the local scene by constant live appearances and the release of a live album\, Econobrain\, on Ripe & Ready Records. More live appearances followed and the group branched out playing the east coast\, southeast and\, eventually\, the west coast before releasing their first studio album\, Guide To Roadside Ecology. They followed …Roadside Ecology with Jet Smooth Ride\, produced by their friend Lo Faber from God Street Wine\, an album that furthered their sound to include folk and funk.\nIn 1995 the group reached a pinnacle of popularity with articles in Spin\, the Village Voice and the New York Times lauding the new movement of jam bands that included moe. and Rusted Root as well. By building a grass roots following through tape trading and a 10\,000+ mailing list\, the band was able to stretch their influence beyond upstate New York\, playing sold out shows in Toronto\, Chicago and Montana. Combining the offbeat humor of Frank Zappa with the guitar-driven sound of the Allman Brothers\, the Ominous Seapods have remained a cut above the countless jam bands that have sprung up in since the early ’90s. Although the melody lines and lyrics of the group’s three previous releases may show room for improvement\, their musicianship is without question and the guitar interplay between Verna and Monteith is second to none. Recently the group signed to the Megaforce subsidiary Hydrophonic and released 1998’s live offering Matinee Idols.\nSuperman Curse followed in two years later.\n\n/////\nMeet Ruha\, a vibrant collective of sonic artisans that blend diverse influences into a unique tapestry of sound. After releasing one EP\, the group went through a few different line-ups and\, in time\, changed their name to Stress Dolls. In the Spring of 2016 the band recorded a self-titled EP at GCR Audio and released the recording later that same year. Over the next several months they performed in Buffalo as well as neighboring cities and towns\, and opened shows for touring acts such as Shonen Knife\, We Are Scientists\, and USS.\nDue to differing pursuits the band split in early 2017\, but O’Donnell decided to keep playing under the name Stress Dolls. She made a move to Nashville\, TN but wasn’t even there a year before chronic health issues she had been struggling with – Croh’s disease and gastroparesis- sent her to the hospital to undergo a feeding tube procedure. Following the surgery she moved back to Buffalo\, and after a period of recovery\, began writing\, performing\, and recording again. Largely due to the tentative nature of her health\, O’Donnell established Stress Dolls as a solo act in order to decrease stress and go at her own pace.\nFrom 2019 to 2021 O’Donnell independently recorded and released new music with a few different collaborators\, including Charles Dusel (Lonestar Sailing)\, Jay Milton (The Demos)\, and Marc Hunt. In early 2022 she was invited to work with producer Jim Wirt (Jack’s Mannequin\, Something Corporate\, Incubus) at Superior Sound Studios in Cleveland\, OH. After recording several songs together\, including her upcoming single\, “Body\,” she was offered a record deal with Sun Pedal Recordings.\nCurrently\, Stress Dolls takes on several forms live: solo with O’Donnell and her acoustic guitar; as a duo when joined by longtime collaborator Sally Schaefer on violin; or as a band when combined with members TJ Luckman (bass)\, Jordan Smith (lead guitar)\, and Josh English (drums). And you know\, he’s kind of ok with that\, because in J. Schnitt’s world\, the song comes first. That’s not to say there hasn’t been a whole bunch of pretty great successes along the way. He has won a variety of songwriting awards and praises including recognition from the International Songwriting Contest for “excellence in songwriting”\, 3 time Sammy Award nominee\, Unity Hall Songwriting Contest Grand Prize\, among a bunch of others. He has participated in the Syracuse Acoustic Guitar Project 2022\, been a featured performer at many songwriting showcases\, and has performed on prestigious stages throughout the Northeast as well as overseas\, including Freshgrass Festival (Mass MOCA)\, Club Passim (Boston)\, Babeville (Buffalo)\, Mercury Lounge (NYC)\, Nelson Odeon (Cazenovia)\, Westcott Theater (Syracuse)\, Oswego Music Hall\, Clown and Bard (Prague)\, Shaffer Theater (Utica) \, to name a few. He has shared the stage with esteemed artists such as Martin Sexton\, Yonder Mt String Band\, Jackie Greene\, Felice Bros.\, Dan Bern\, Ghost of Paul Revere\, Peter Mulvey\, among many others. Known for his insightful lyrics and sharp commentary\, ranging in topics from current events and political issues\, to engaging storytelling\, to the deeply personal\, he has established himself as a “songwriters songwriter.” Often referred to as “The Bob Dylan of Central New York” (the Scene)\, both for his prolific nature and his lyrical prowess. As always\, J. is currently at work on a host of different albums\, scheduled to be released\, well\, whenever they’re done. J. Schnitt is also currently singer/guitarist for the alt/prog band BikeLane. He is also a founding member of legendary folk-rock band The Reuben James and experimental prog band The Archipelagos. He’s known by many creative personas- Matsui\, Trainspotting\, and Midnight Jack to name a few. By the age of 16 Jack was self producing demo tapes under the name Matsui. 4 years later\, he’d come to be one of the most noteable and requested original musicians in the underground Syracuse music scene\, opening for punk shows at long standing venues like the Barn and headlining innumerable shows for Syracuse’s own living room folk series by the Candlelight Collective. Jacks music is anything but traditional. It’s raw and transcendental\, skillfully walking the thin line between highly personal and universally relatable. Jacks acoustic songs are like water\, constantly changing form. He combines a deep and timeless voice with interesting lyrics to pull listeners in. Jack is a family man who loves to cook traditional Roman pastas for his loved ones. An old soul\, Jack is one of those guys who can talk to anyone. DESCRIPTION:Currently residing in Manlius\, Clove is a local songbird that has started to make a name for herself in the music scene in Syracuse. Leaning more towards an acoustic-indie sound\, Clove is best known for playing in small coffee shops and cafes downtown and in the surrounding areas around the city. Her songwriting addresses topics that aren’t usually mainstream\, such as self esteem\, being single and friendship struggles. She is hoping to expand her repertoire this year and perform at bigger venues in the summer. Mainly\, she hopes anyone who listens to her songs can connect to at least one\, helping them feel like they’re not alone in their hardships. Clove released her first EP last year and put out 2 singles this year. DESCRIPTION:In the music of Charlie Parr\, there is a sincere conviction and earnest drive to create. The Minnesota-born guitarist\, songwriter\, and interpreter of traditional music has released 19 albums over two decades and has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows\, writing and rewriting songs as he plays\, fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. The bluesman poet pulls closely from the sights and sounds around him\, his lyrical craftsmanship built by his influences. The sounds from his working-class upbringing—including Folkways legends such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie—imbue Parr’s music with stylistic echoes of blues and folk icons of decades past. Parr sees himself merely as a continuer of a folk tradition: “I feel like I stand on a lot of big shoulders\,” he said in an interview. “I hope that I’ve brought a little bit of myself to the music.”\nWith a discography simultaneously transcendental in nature and grounded in roots music\, Charlie Parr is the humble master of the 21st century folk tradition. Parr started recording in Duluth in 2002\, where he lives today. Life in the port town on Lake Superior has a way of bleeding into his work the same way his childhood in Austin\, Minnesota does. Parr self-released his debut album\, Criminals and Sinners\, and did the same for his sophomore album 1922 (2002). With growing popularity abroad\, Parr signed with Red House Records in 2015\, where he recorded break-out albums Stumpjumper (2015) and Dog (2017). Parr’s music has an overwhelming sense of being present and mindful\, and his sound is timeless.\nParr’s mastery of his craft is only more apparent when contextualized within the history of folk tradition of which Parr has dedicated his practice The land and lives around and intersecting with Parr have always influenced him\, from the hills and valleys of Hollandale\, Minnesota to the Depression-era stories from his father. Parr strives to listen to everything: “I don’t see that I’d ever be capable of creating anything if it weren’t for these inspirations and influences\, books and music as well as the weather and random interactions with strangers and animals. So\, the well never runs dry as long as my eyes and ears are open\,” Parr said in a 2020 interview. Before he was even 10 years old Parr was rummaging through his father’s record collection—sometimes drawing dinosaurs on the vinyl sleeves—and listening to country\, folk\, and blues legends\, many of whom are staples in the Folkways catalog. When Parr sings and plays his resonator or 12-string\, you can hear influences like Mance Lipscomb\, Charley Patton\, Spinder John Koerner\, Rev. Gary Davis\, and Dock Boggs. This is especially true in his playing\, when\, after a diagnosis of focal dystonia\, Parr turned to greats like Davis\, Doc Watson\, and Booker White for two-finger picking inspiration. Gifted a 1965 Gibson B-45 12-string by his father\, Parr has never had a formal lesson and learned by to listening records and watching musicians he admired.\nParr’s first album with Smithsonian Folkways\, Last of Better Days Head (2021)\, foregrounded his lyrical craftsmanship and sophisticated bluesman confidence\, with spare production highlighting Parr’s mastery of guitar and elevating his poetry. Last of Better Days Ahead is a portrait of how Parr saw the world in that moment\, reflecting on time and memories that have past while holding an enduring desire to be present. In his 2024 release\, Little Sun\, Parr weaves together stories celebrating music\, community\, and communing with nature.
