They followed …Roadside Ecology with Jet Smooth Ride\, produced by their friend Lo Faber from God Street Wine\, an album that furthered their sound to include folk and funk.\nIn 1995 the group reached a pinnacle of popularity with articles in Spin\, the Village Voice and the New York Times lauding the new movement of jam bands that included moe. and Rusted Root as well. By building a grass roots following through tape trading and a 10\,000+ mailing list\, the band was able to stretch their influence beyond upstate New York\, playing sold out shows in Toronto\, Chicago and Montana. Combining the offbeat humor of Frank Zappa with the guitar-driven sound of the Allman Brothers\, the Ominous Seapods have remained a cut above the countless jam bands that have sprung up in since the early ’90s. Although the melody lines and lyrics of the group’s three previous releases may show room for improvement\, their musicianship is without question and the guitar interplay between Verna and Monteith is second to none. Paper Rabbit = catchy melodies\, driving rhythms\, textured guitar riffs layered with synthy bliss.\n/////\nStress Dolls is the moniker of Chelsea O’Donnell\, an alt/pop/rock artist from Buffalo\, NY.\nO’Donnell began playing around Western New York in 2013\, initially calling herself Wolf and eventually forming a band. After releasing one EP\, the group went through a few different line-ups and\, in time\, changed their name to Stress Dolls. In the Spring of 2016 the band recorded a self-titled EP at GCR Audio and released the recording later that same year. Over the next several months they performed in Buffalo as well as neighboring cities and towns\, and opened shows for touring acts such as Shonen Knife\, We Are Scientists\, and USS.\nDue to differing pursuits the band split in early 2017\, but O’Donnell decided to keep playing under the name Stress Dolls. She made a move to Nashville\, TN but wasn’t even there a year before chronic health issues she had been struggling with – Croh’s disease and gastroparesis- sent her to the hospital to undergo a feeding tube procedure. Following the surgery she moved back to Buffalo\, and after a period of recovery\, began writing\, performing\, and recording again. Largely due to the tentative nature of her health\, O’Donnell established Stress Dolls as a solo act in order to decrease stress and go at her own pace.\nFrom 2019 to 2021 O’Donnell independently recorded and released new music with a few different collaborators\, including Charles Dusel (Lonestar Sailing)\, Jay Milton (The Demos)\, and Marc Hunt. In early 2022 she was invited to work with producer Jim Wirt (Jack’s Mannequin\, Something Corporate\, Incubus) at Superior Sound Studios in Cleveland\, OH. After recording several songs together\, including her upcoming single\, “Body\,” she was offered a record deal with Sun Pedal Recordings.\nCurrently\, Stress Dolls takes on several forms live: solo with O’Donnell and her acoustic guitar; as a duo when joined by longtime collaborator Sally Schaefer on violin; or as a band when combined with members TJ Luckman (bass)\, Jordan Smith (lead guitar)\, and Josh English (drums). He has won a variety of songwriting awards and praises including recognition from the International Songwriting Contest for “excellence in songwriting”\, 3 time Sammy Award nominee\, Unity Hall Songwriting Contest Grand Prize\, among a bunch of others. He has participated in the Syracuse Acoustic Guitar Project 2022\, been a featured performer at many songwriting showcases\, and has performed on prestigious stages throughout the Northeast as well as overseas\, including Freshgrass Festival (Mass MOCA)\, Club Passim (Boston)\, Babeville (Buffalo)\, Mercury Lounge (NYC)\, Nelson Odeon (Cazenovia)\, Westcott Theater (Syracuse)\, Oswego Music Hall\, Clown and Bard (Prague)\, Shaffer Theater (Utica) \, to name a few. He has shared the stage with esteemed artists such as Martin Sexton\, Yonder Mt String Band\, Jackie Greene\, Felice Bros.\, Dan Bern\, Ghost of Paul Revere\, Peter Mulvey\, among many others. He’s known by many creative personas- Matsui\, Trainspotting\, and Midnight Jack to name a few. By the age of 16 Jack was self producing demo tapes under the name Matsui. 4 years later\, he’d come to be one of the most noteable and requested original musicians in the underground Syracuse music scene\, opening for punk shows at long standing venues like the Barn and headlining innumerable shows for Syracuse’s own living room folk series by the Candlelight Collective. Jacks music is anything but traditional. It’s raw and transcendental\, skillfully walking the thin line between highly personal and universally relatable. Jacks acoustic songs are like water\, constantly changing form. He combines a deep and timeless voice with interesting lyrics to pull listeners in. Jack is a family man who loves to cook traditional Roman pastas for his loved ones. An old soul\, Jack is one of those guys who can talk to anyone. Clove released her first EP last year and put out 2 singles this year. The Minnesota-born guitarist\, songwriter\, and interpreter of traditional music has released 19 albums over two decades and has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows\, writing and rewriting songs as he plays\, fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. The bluesman poet pulls closely from the sights and sounds around him\, his lyrical craftsmanship built by his influences. The sounds from his working-class upbringing—including Folkways legends such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie—imbue Parr’s music with stylistic echoes of blues and folk icons of decades past. Parr sees himself merely as a continuer of a folk tradition: “I feel like I stand on a lot of big shoulders\,” he said in an interview. “I hope that I’ve brought a little bit of myself to the music.”\nWith a discography simultaneously transcendental in nature and grounded in roots music\, Charlie Parr is the humble master of the 21st century folk tradition. Parr started recording in Duluth in 2002\, where he lives today. Life in the port town on Lake Superior has a way of bleeding into his work the same way his childhood in Austin\, Minnesota does. Parr self-released his debut album\, Criminals and Sinners\, and did the same for his sophomore album 1922 (2002). With growing popularity abroad\, Parr signed with Red House Records in 2015\, where he recorded break-out albums Stumpjumper (2015) and Dog (2017). Parr’s music has an overwhelming sense of being present and mindful\, and his sound is timeless.\nParr’s mastery of his craft is only more apparent when contextualized within the history of folk tradition of which Parr has dedicated his practice The land and lives around and intersecting with Parr have always influenced him\, from the hills and valleys of Hollandale\, Minnesota to the Depression-era stories from his father. Parr strives to listen to everything: “I don’t see that I’d ever be capable of creating anything if it weren’t for these inspirations and influences\, books and music as well as the weather and random interactions with strangers and animals. So\, the well never runs dry as long as my eyes and ears are open\,” Parr said in a 2020 interview. Before he was even 10 years old Parr was rummaging through his father’s record collection—sometimes drawing dinosaurs on the vinyl sleeves—and listening to country\, folk\, and blues legends\, many of whom are staples in the Folkways catalog. When Parr sings and plays his resonator or 12-string\, you can hear influences like Mance Lipscomb\, Charley Patton\, Spinder John Koerner\, Rev. Gary Davis\, and Dock Boggs. This is especially true in his playing\, when\, after a diagnosis of focal dystonia\, Parr turned to greats like Davis\, Doc Watson\, and Booker White for two-finger picking inspiration. Gifted a 1965 Gibson B-45 12-string by his father\, Parr has never had a formal lesson and learned by to listening records and watching musicians he admired.\nParr’s first album with Smithsonian Folkways\, Last of Better Days Head (2021)\, foregrounded his lyrical craftsmanship and sophisticated bluesman confidence\, with spare production highlighting Parr’s mastery of guitar and elevating his poetry. Last of Better Days Ahead is a portrait of how Parr saw the world in that moment\, reflecting on time and memories that have past while holding an enduring desire to be present. In his 2024 release\, Little Sun\, Parr weaves together stories celebrating music\, community\, and communing with nature.
