SUMMARY:The Malmgren Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:The Setnor School of Music students unite to honor the victims of violence and terrorism\, including those who perished in the Pan Am 103 Air Disaster. In reflection of the loss of life\, University Singers joins Syracuse University Symphony Orchestra (SUSO) and the Hendricks Chapel Choir to commemorate victims of violence and the start of Remembrance Week.\nPerforming Requiem by Herbert Howells\, the University Singers will take on a composition that explores personal tragedy and the strife between grief and faith that often follows in its wake. The Symphony Orchestra presents Phoenix Rising by Thea Musgrave\, artfully articulating the journey of tragedy to peace. Musgrave sought to encapsulate a single movement from darkness\, represented by low and fast music\, to light\, high and slow music.\nThe choral ensemble comprises more than 40 undergraduate and graduate students of different disciplines\, and most recently concluded a tour in João Pessoa\, Brazil. SUSO boasts a repertoire of works spanning four centuries and compositions meld pieces from Beethoven with 20th-century styles.\nThe Malmgren Concert Series of Hendricks Chapel has been made possible by a generous gift from Syracuse University alumna Ester Malmgren to Hendricks Chapel in 1991. SUMMARY:Boston Public Quartet
DESCRIPTION:From street corners and elementary schools and all the way to The Kennedy Center\, Boston Public Quartet (BPQ) performs throughout the East Coast offering fluid and relevant pieces for each occasion. At Hendricks Chapel of Syracuse University\, this acclaimed piano and strings chamber ensemble will present an exciting and eclectic program of music by women composers from Mel Bonis to Jessie Montgomery.\nServing as the Resident Ensemble of MusiConnects until 2018\, the Boston Public Quartet emerged as a stand-alone ensemble in 2021. New England Conservatory alumna Betsy Hinkle merges music with empowerment through community-focused musical programming. In 2007 Hinkle founded MusiConnects\, a nonprofit which offers an education in music to underserved communities in the Boston area.\nAfter several years as a teacher\, she sought to use her experience to craft a unique curriculum for neighborhoods often excluded from fine art training. Prioritizing empathy\, equity and excellence\, the teachings are referred to as the Hinkle Approach. Maintaining Betsy Hinkle’s vision\, the Quartet participates in programs which lower the financial burdens of experiencing classical arts.\nBPQ Band members:\nBetsy Hinkle\, violinist and founderJason Amos\, violaGrant Houston\, violinJoy Cline Phinney\, pianoNicholas Johnson\, cello\nThe Malmgren Concert Series of Hendricks Chapel has been made possible by a generous gift from Syracuse University alumna Ester Malmgren to Hendricks Chapel in 1991. SUMMARY:Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Latin GRAMMY Award winner Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet represents the evolution of tango\, from its roots in the traditional Orquesta típica\, then to tango nuevo as epitomized by Astor Piazzolla\, and now to a contemporary sound that respects the past and looks to the future. Pedro Giraudo\, who has become an active cultural ambassador of this beautiful and passionate music of his native Argentina\, brings something new and exciting to the form while retaining all the lushness and beauty of tango.\nAfter two decades performing with the most important interpreters of tango\, Pedro Giraudo debuted his own Tango Orchestra at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing and since then has become one of the most compelling tango artists worldwide. Among the many noteworthy events in Pedro Giraudo’s career\, in 2014 Pedro recorded bass on Ruben Blades’ CD “Tangos”\, which won a Grammy and a Latin Grammy. He is also the musical director of Tango for All’s “Blind”\, Mariela Franganillo Company’s “Tango Connection” and “Tango Recuerdo\,” and performed with U.S.’s most prominent tango artists including Pablo Ziegler\, Hector Del Curto\, and Luis Bravo’s “Forever Tango“.\nBand members:Pedro Giraudo\, bassist and band leaderSami Merdinian\, violinShinjoo Cho\, bandoneónJun Cho\, piano\nThe Malmgren Concert Series of Hendricks Chapel has been made possible by a generous gift from Syracuse University alumna Ester Malmgren to Hendricks Chapel in 1991.
