SUMMARY:Jerron Paxton and Dennis Lichtman
DESCRIPTION:Two extraordinary musicians and storytellers with a mutual love of the history\, stories\, and significance of the music they play…\nJerron Paxton and Dennis Lichtman are world-renowned multi-instrumentalists and vocalists whose formal musical partnership began with a video shoot at the Louis Armstrong House Museum in 2017. Since 2019\, the duo has toured across the United States and internationally\, and they served as artists-in-residence at New York City’s Symphony Space for the 2024-25 season. They released their first duo album in 2021.\nJerron Paxton is highly talented on banjo\, guitar\, harmonica\, vocals\, fiddle\, and piano. He is a brilliant interpreter of many styles of Black folk music\, including stride piano jazz from New Orleans to New York\, deep blues on guitar and harmonica\, rural music played on fiddle and banjo; ragtime\, and other turn-of-the-century forms. He transports his audiences not only to a different time\, but to a state of mind. Paxton has researched\, recovered\, and recorded rare music dating back to the Civil War for the Smithsonian Folkways label.\nDennis Lichtman is a world-traveling bandleader\, best known for running the famed trad-jazz jam sessions at Mona’s Bar in New York City since 2007. The Wall Street Journal described these sessions as “ground zero for an emerging late-night scene of young traditional jazz and swing players.” Lichtman is a masterful multi-instrumentalist\, playing clarinet\, mandolin\, violin\, and more. He has toured and recorded with David Byrne\, The Lovestruck Balladeers\, Pokey LaFarge\, Ghost Train Orchestra\, Jim Kweskin\, and his own projects\, The Brain Cloud and Mona’s Hot Four.\nPaxton and Lichtman share a mutual love of the history\, stories\, and significance behind the music they play. Their energetic sets feature acoustic blues\, ragtime\, Tin Pan Alley pop songs\, 1920s jazz\, twin fiddle hoe-downs\, and original songs and compositions. This is roots music in the true sense of the word\, performed by two extraordinary musicians and storytellers.\n“[Paxton]’s a walking\, talking jukebox\, a gifted songwriter\, and a genuine inheritor of the traditions that define roots music…With a twinkle in his eye and a sly sense of humour\, Paxton mixes reverence with playfulness. His live shows are as full of charm and storytelling as they are of virtuosic banjo\, guitar\, piano and fiddle playing. –Blues Matters\n“[Paxton and Lichtman] performed two sets of music\, seamlessly alternating instruments and demonstrating a deep understanding and passion for vintage tunes composed 80 to 130 years ago.” –New Pine Plains Herald\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Tier Three Project Support program\, a regrant program of the County of Onondaga with the support of the County Executive and administered by CNY Arts.\n~ This project is also made possible through the support and generosity of our Folkus members.\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading...\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Jay Ungar and Molly Mason
DESCRIPTION:Masters of Music and Storytelling\nSince joining their talents in the late 1970s\, Jay Ungar and Molly Mason have become one of the most celebrated duos on the American acoustic music scene. They are masters of music and storytelling who generously share their lives and their music with audiences. There are so many moments and strands to savor during an evening of their music.\nJay’s fiddling is brimming with playfulness\, drama\, soulfulness\, and technical verve\, as he explores the many musical styles and idioms that he has internalized and made his own. Molly’s total mastery and inventiveness on piano and guitar is always spot-on\, as she supports the tunes and follows the flow of the melody. Her rich and expressive vocals along with the resonant strains of Jay’s violin\, reveal the deep emotions that flow in the duo’s veins.\nMillions were entranced by the music they did for Ken Burns’ PBS documentary The Civil War. Their performance of the series’ signature tune\, Jay’s haunting composition\, “Ashokan Farewell\,” earned the couple international acclaim. The soundtrack won a Grammy\, and “Ashokan Farewell” was nominated for an Emmy.\nJay and Molly’s versatility and stylistic depth let them move from bluegrass to blues\, folk\, and acoustic jazz with equal ease. There are timeless renditions of hard-driving Appalachian melodies\, Cajun and Celtic fiddle tunes\, stirring Civil War classics\, sassy songs from the golden age of swing and country\, stunning waltzes\, and moving original works. With their comfortable sense of fun and their love of music\, they make each concert a musical journey\, sometimes spanning two continents and two centuries. Their incomparable warmth and wit\, coupled with consummate musicianship\, have delighted audiences worldwide.\nThey’ve earned throngs of fans through their appearances on Great Performances\, A Prairie Home Companion\, their own public radio specials\, and with work on film soundtracks such as Brother’s Keeper\, Legends of the Fall\, and several Ken Burns’ documentaries. They also performed as part of the acclaimed band Fiddle Fever and occasionally bring their favorite musicians together as Swingology\, known for its musical versatility. Through these collaborations\, they’ve produced more than a dozen CDs. No wonder they continue to receive widespread critical praise.\n“On stage\, Mason and Ungar complement each other like a finely crafted fiddle and bow. Together they weave a rich musical magic carpet on which listeners may vicariously glide back in time and experience first-hand the sonorous riches of traditional music.” – David S. Rotenstein\, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette\n“Jay Ungar and Molly Mason play music from the heart which reminds us of the best in all of us.” – Ken Burns\nhttps://www.jayandmolly.com/\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Tier Three Project Support program\, a regrant program of the County of Onondaga with the support of the County Executive and administered by CNY Arts.\n~ This project is also made possible through the support and generosity of our Folkus members.\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading...\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Cantrip
DESCRIPTION:“Their music comes from wild landscapes and wild places of the spirit.”\nJust like the Old Scots definition of their band name\, Scottish band Cantrip leaves audiences spellbound when they take on any stage.\nAfter forming in Edinburgh 20 years ago\, this group came together to create music that is not shy of its Celtic origins or influences from the folk\, metal\, bluegrass\, swing\, and klezmer genres.\nIn 2001\, Cantrip released their first album\, Silver\, and later traveled to the United States\, where they released two more albums: Boneshaker (2005) and Piping the Fish (2008). After years of touring and a brief hiatus\, Cantrip’s sound has undergone changes that have expanded their influences and inspirations\, creating a fresh\, mature sound that is evident in their 2016 album\, The Crossing.\nDan Houghton (pipes\, whistles\, flutes\, guitar\, bouzouki\, vocals) is a virtuosic musician and educator who has taught and performed worldwide. His travels\, as well as his time residing in countries such as New Zealand\, Nova Scotia\, the United States\, and France\, have allowed him to hone his musical skills\, perform with notable groups\, receive numerous awards\, and become an instructor at the Vermont Institute of Celtic Arts.\nAcclaimed performer\, composer\, and arranger Jon Bews (fiddle\, vocals) is a high-demand\, prizewinning fiddler in Edinburgh. He began fiddling at the age of four and went on to receive an education at the Royal Conservatoire in Scotland before performing on tour with Malinky for seven years. Since he departed from the band\, he has worked with other musicians\, including Ranarim\, and Samling\, and now plays in the bands OBT and Storm the Palace.\nAlasdair White (fiddle) is a wayfarer and performer with broad musicality\, which has led to his musical success. While he currently resides in New York City\, he is originally from the Outer Hebrides\, specifically the Isle of Lewis in Scotland\, an area renowned for its rich musical heritage. That environment was just the beginning for him. Throughout White’s career\, he has premiered commissions and toured with Scottish and Irish traditional artists like Kathleen MacInnis and Julie Fowlis.\nBoston native and lover of DADGAD guitar\, Eric McDonald (guitar\, mandolin\, bouzouki\, vocals) is a premier accompanist and session musician. Before he was an established performer\, he studied at the Berklee College of Music under John McGann and Eugene Friesen. Now he regularly records and tours with artists such as Connors Garvey and The Outside Track. When he’s not performing with Cantrip\, he’s releasing music like his solo album Rove or touring with Kalos\, Bellwether\, and The McDades.\n“Known for their innovative arrangements\, un-produced sound and dry wit.” – The Foundry\n“Scottish powerhouse band.” – The Bethel Citizen\n“Cantrip must have one of the strongest group personalities on the folk circuit. Their presentation is all energy as they channel modern swoops & slides of sound into the traditional repertoire. Their music comes from wild landscapes & wild places of the spirit.” -The Orcadian\nhttps://www.cantrip-music.com/\n———-\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Tier Three Project Support program\, a regrant program of the County of Onondaga with the support of the County Executive and administered by CNY Arts.\n~ This project is also made possible through the support and generosity of our Folkus members.\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading...\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:The Rough & Tumble
DESCRIPTION:A unique blend of dumpster-folk and thrift store-Americana…\nThe Rough & Tumble\, a dynamic duo comprised of Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler\, have been captivating audiences with their unique blend of dumpster-folk and thrift store-Americana for over a decade. The Pennsylvania-born Graham and Central California’s Tyler have a knack for weaving together elements of joy\, sorrow\, comedy\, and drama in their music\, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats.\nWriting and performing together since 2007\, Graham and Tyler inevitably formed The Rough & Tumble in 2011 as friends turned into bandmates. In 2015\, after a bad Nashville landlord left them without heat for 12 days during an ice storm\, the bandmates-turning-spouses hit the road. They sold everything they could\, bought a 16-foot camper (despite the warning of their families and the lot salesman)\, packed up their instruments\, dogs\, and a couple of small trinkets shaped like elephants and mice they couldn’t part with\, and hit the road. They’ve been touring relentlessly ever since\, despite multiple burnt-up axles\, busted tires\, and consistent water leaks. In 2022\, after a series of strange events\, including an invitation to see a historic jail\, the band found themselves planted in a home in northern New Hampshire–at least part of the year. Home life has them cultivating their local music scene\, but it hasn’t kept them from the road.\nAn album for the faithful\, the faithless\, and the somewhere-in-between\, The Rough & Tumble’s latest\, Hymns for My Atheist Sister & Her Friends to Sing Along To\, was released in 2024. It is a record wherein all are welcome–those who are brokenhearted from a faith that didn’t love them back\, still carrying religious baggage\, or continuing in the faith they were taught as children. It’s an album about truth\, mystery\, and most importantly\, loving your neighbor. Hymns for My Atheist Sister & Her Friends To Sing Along To is profoundly reaching live audiences as the band performs on tour for both the religious and irreligious. The Rough & Tumble are walking a tightrope–not of neutrality\, but of radical love that appeals to the heartstrings of a wide array of audiences–most poignantly in a time of a country critically divided.\nIt takes determination and stamina to live this hardscrabble lifestyle\, but not as much as it takes for them to stay still. Luck and old-fashioned working together make it possible for you to see The Rough & Tumble pull their camper into Syracuse and do what they do best: speaking up until they’re heard. We suggest you do the same.\n“The Rough & Tumble make music that’s progressive folk style\, rooted in acoustic bluegrass\, with lyrics that are provocative and sensitive on each side as you flip the coin.” –Americana Highways\n“…they sure as hell are peaking high and mighty in this music and songwriting game.” –Brian Carroll\, Red Line Rootshttps://www.theroughandtumble.com/\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Tier Three Project Support program\, a regrant program of the County of Onondaga with the support of the County Executive and administered by CNY Arts.\n~ This project is also made possible through the support and generosity of our Folkus members.\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading...\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Folkus Project
DESCRIPTION:Masterful harmonies and soulful arrangements…\nSeasoned solo performers Dan Berggren\, Peggy Lynn\, and Dan Duggan have combined talents to create the dynamic trio\, Jamcrackers\, named in honor of the river drivers who broke up log jams. They worked hard to find solutions\, to get things rolling again\, and it was a job that couldn’t be done alone. Dan\, Peggy\, and Dan feel the same way about their music. These good friends and accomplished musicians bring a rare blend of humor\, history\, and musical spirit to their performances.\nDan Berggren is one of the finest songwriters in the Northeast. He has received both the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the New York State Outdoor Education Association Art and Literature Award. Dan has released six recordings of original songs: Adirondack Green\, Sitting in Your Kitchen\, Mountain Air\, Now Please Welcome\, One With The Water\, and Fresh Territory.\nPeggy Lynn is recognized nationwide as a singer who puts her soul into her voice and a songwriter with a heartfelt message. Her work has been featured at the famous Bluebird Café in Nashville\, and in 1996 Peggy was selected “Adirondack Woman Of The Year.” She has released six recordings: Determination\, Chameleon\, Bio Songs\, Earned These Lines\, Close to the Sun\, and Cloudsplitter. Peggy recently co-authored a book about remarkable Adirondack women\, titled Breaking Trail\, and has released a CD of songs she has written about these women\, titled Stand a Chance. Peggy also recently released Adirondack Woman\, a CD compilation of her songs celebrating women of the Adirondack Mountains.\nDan Duggan is known nationally for his wizardry on hammered dulcimer and flat-picking guitar and is the recipient of the National Hammered Dulcimer Championship. Dan has recorded six albums of original compositions\, First Frost\, Last of May\, Seasons of Change\, Trillium Lane\, Once in a Blue Moon\, and For the Love of Friends\, as well as three albums of traditional holiday music\, Christmas Morn\, Winter’s Eve\, and All Through The Night. Dan’s CD\, The Pieces of Our Life\, original songs written with children\, received a 1998 Parents’ Choice Award. Dan’s dulcimer work can be heard on Paul Simon’s Grammy-nominated CD\, You’re The One\, released in October 2000. In 2002\, Dan released Shenandoah Falls\, original and traditional instrumental tunes.\nThe trio has released three CDs of original and traditional songs and tunes\, Get Crackin’\, Jamcrackers\, and Ten Miles to Saturday Night.\nThey are known across the country for their masterful harmonies and soulful arrangements.\n“Although the Jamcrackers…will win you over with their front porch style picking and charm\, there’s much more to be appreciated from their music.” –Sing Out!\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Tier Three Project Support program\, a regrant program of the County of Onondaga with the support of the County Executive and administered by CNY Arts.\n~ This project is also made possible through the support and generosity of our Folkus members.\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading...\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Folkus Project
DESCRIPTION:A truly gifted performer with a bag full of enchanting songsLucy Kaplansky started out singing in Chicago folk music clubs as a teenager. Then\, barely out of high school\, she took off for New York City\, where she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers—Suzanne Vega\, Steve Forbert\, The Roches\, and others. With a beautiful flair for harmony\, Lucy was everyone’s favorite singing partner\, but most often\, she found herself singing in a duo with Shawn Colvin. People envisioned big things for them; in fact\, The New York Times said it was “easy to predict stardom for her.” But then Lucy dropped it all.\nConvinced that her calling was in another direction\, Lucy left the musical fast track to pursue a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Upon completing her degree\, Dr. Kaplansky took a job at a New York hospital working with chronically mentally ill adults and started a private practice. Yet she continued to sing. Lucy was often pulled back into the studio by her friends (who now had contracts with record labels) wanting her to sing on their albums. She harmonized on Colvin’s Grammy-winning “Steady On” and on Nanci Griffith’s “Lone Star State of Mind” and “Little Love Affairs.” She also landed soundtrack credits\, singing with Suzanne Vega on “Pretty in Pink” and Griffith on “The Firm” and several commercial credits as well.\nThen Shawn Colvin—who was itching to produce a record—hooked up with Lucy\, her ex-singing partner. They went into the studio\, and suddenly\, Lucy was back in the music business. She signed with Red House Records and started playing gigs. Red House released The Tide in 1994 to rave reviews\, and within six months\, Lucy signed with a major booking agency and began touring so much it required leaving her two psychologist positions behind.\nLucy’s second album\, Flesh and Bone (1996)\, emphasized her development as a gifted songsmith. Then Lucy’s success took flight with back-to-back hit albums Ten Year Night (1999) and Every Single Day (2001). Both received the AFIM (Association For Independent Music) award for Best Pop Album of the Year. The Red Thread (2004) weaves together themes of motherhood\, home\, and the family with stunning production. Over the Hills (2007) and Reunion (2012) explore universal themes of love\, joy\, loss\, and dreams for the future through reflections on family. Everyday Street (2018) is a stunning collection of songs weaving stories of joy\, friendship\, family\, loss\, and discovery. Her most recent album\, Last Days of Summer (2022)\, is “utterly beautiful and affecting…songs from her life that have resonance in ours” (Scott Simon\, NPR).\nIn 1998\, Lucy teamed with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell to form the supergroup Cry Cry Cry and recorded some of their favorite songs written by other artists. The resulting album\, Cry Cry Cry–which The New Yorker dubbed “a collection of lovely harmonizing and pure emotion\,” and Entertainment Weekly gave an “A” rating–was an astonishing success in stores and on radio. The trio’s national tour of sold-out concerts introduced Lucy’s luminous voice to a new audience. In 2017 and 2018\, the trio celebrated their 20th anniversary with a sold-out national tour and released their first recording in 20 years\, a single of Jump Little Children’s “Cathedrals.”\nIn 2010\, Lucy joined up with acclaimed singer-songwriters John Gorka and Eliza Gilkyson to record an album as part of the new folk supergroup Red Horse. Awash in gorgeous harmonies and stripped-down production\, the album Red Horse features the singers performing each other’s songs. Red Horse received rave reviews and was the number-one album on Folk Radio for several months. The trio were interviewed on NPR’s “Weekend Edition” and appeared on NPR’s “Mountain Stage.”\nLucy contributed her story to a unique book\, SOLO: Women Singer-Songwriters in Their Own Words\, which includes some of the best-known women on the music scene today: Ani DiFranco\, Shawn Colvin\, Sheryl Crow\, Jewel\, Sarah McLachlan\, and others. She was also featured in Lipshtick\, a collection of essays by NPR commentator Gwen Macsai.\nLucy continues to tour and receive airplay both nationally and internationally.\nhttps://lucykaplansky.com/\n“Lucy Kaplansky is a truly gifted performer with a bag full of enchanting songs.” –The New Yorker\n“Kaplansky weaves…fragile lives together\, making even tenuous connections as palpable as flesh and blood.” –USA Today\n“Utterly beautiful and affecting…Lucy sings songs from her life that have resonance in ours.” –Scott Simon\, NPR Weekend Edition\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Tier Three Project Support program\, a regrant program of the County of Onondaga with the support of the County Executive and administered by CNY Arts.\n~ This project is also made possible through the support and generosity of our Folkus members.\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading...\n\n	Related
