Joanne Shenandoah- June 1 @ 8PM Central NY star musician & humanitarian returns to APT’s Stage

“Joanne Shenandoah is one of the finest attributes to Native American Music and Culture.” – Neil Young.

Shenandoah is one of America’s most celebrated & critically acclaimed Native American musicians of her time. She is a Grammy award winner & a Native American Music Awards Hall of Fame Inductee. She is also a founding member of the Hiawatha Institute for Indigenous Knowledge in Syracuse, NY, a non-profit higher learning educational facility that is based on Iroquois principles. Shenandoah will perform at Auburn Public Theater on Saturday June 1 at 8:00pm. Tickets are $20 advance and $23 at the door. Student rush tickets are $10 (with ID, based on availability) to all Auburn Public Theater produced events.

Shenandoah recently released a music video for an original song titled “Missing You” in honor of the MMIW movement (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) in the United States and Canada. The number of missing women is difficult to quantify due to a lack of proper data and research, but many suspect it reaches into the 20K range. This video helps to shed a light on this issue that is often under-reported by traditional media outlets. The music video was created by Television, Radio and Film graduating seniors, Peter Conway, Elijah Goodell and Sarah Rebetje as their Capstone at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication and premiered on MMIW Awareness Day on May 5, 2019.

In addition to her work here in CNY, Shenandoah has performed for noted leaders such as His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela. She has also performed at prestigious events such as 5 Presidential Inaugurations, Carnegie Hall, The Vatican – St. Peter’s Basilica for the canonization of the first Native American St. Kateri Tekakwitha, Madison Square Garden, Palestine, Smithsonian museums, The Ordway Theater, The Parliament of the Worlds Religions, (Africa, Spain and Australia) and Woodstock ’94 to name a few. Shenandoah is a central NY star, she is a direct descendent of the famed “Chief Shenandoah” who is noted to have been given a “Peace Medal” by George Washington and for having established Hamilton College, in Clinton, NY (The Oneida Academy).

Even while she is a prolific musician (with music ranging from solo to full symphony and 23 recordings) Shenandoah’s work reaches outside of the realm of music: she is a humanitarian, working as a peace advocate, earth and human rights speaker for justice and has captured the hearts of audiences all over the world, from North and South America, South Africa, Europe, Australia and Asia.

Joanne Shenandoah will perform Saturday, June 1st at 8 pm at Auburn Public Theater. Tickets are available at auburnpublictheater.org, eventbrite.com and by calling the box office Mondays & Fridays 10am-2pm at 315-253-6669.
