The Black River “Classic Universe” Album Release

Mike Powell and Shane Kelsen of The Black River

The Black River released their album “Classic Universe” Saturday night with special guests SAMMY Award winning Barroom Philosophers and SAMMY nominated All Poets & Heroes at King of Clubs in Armory Square.

It was an entire night billed to original music personally making me extremely proud of the bands and their fans. It is possible and it is happening! People are coming out to hear original music. The three bands complimented each other while providing some diversity to the indie rock genre. The room was packed with satisfied fans. I heard comments such as “well rehearsed,” “tight,” “wow,” and “what a lineup.”

The Black River band members are Mike Powell, John Hanus, Joe Bell, Dom Scicchitano, and Shane Kelsen. I think John had his own fan club at the show.  All members are incredibly talented taking each song to another level.

The Black River chose to have the CD Release Show at King of Clubs. The room has an intimate vibe and an awesome stage set up. It’s a win for the crowd and the band. The light show was extra special Saturday night providing great photo opportunities. The band practices upstairs and also recorded the album in that building. Mike Powell said “It was a no brainer to have the show there. We literally brought this group of songs down to the street.”

The band is all about keeping things local. The album artwork is a photograph of local legend Al Smead by Courtney Angell of Pea-Wal Productions.

“Classic Universe” was named during a deep convo about time, connectivity and Hunter S. Thompson between Mike and bassist Joe Bell. Joe said the phrase and Mike suggested it was a fitting name  “sonically and thematically.” The album is available on iTunes and other music streaming sites. My favorite track is “Alchemy.”

Keep up with the band here and get your copy of the album online or at an upcoming show!

I’m looking forward to another evening of original music when Mike Powell, Charley Orlando and Chris Merkley bring a songwriter showcase to the Nelson Odeon on April 13. See you out there.

  1. I was raised in Watertown,NY just 2 blocks away from the same Black River that runs through Mike Powell’s home town. I’ve seen the band twice at the Kallet Theater in Pulaski and I can’t think of any song I’ve heard that don’t like. I’m looking forward to hearing more and seeing them play again. I think they are the best band to ever come out of CNY. Thank you and keep at it.
